The first of the two Varsity Hockey Semi-Final games took place on Monday night. The matchup was between the 11-3 HAFTR Hawks (East #2 seed) and the 14-0 Frisch Cougars (West #1 seed) in Paramus, NJ. In the first period, both teams came out flying. Both HAFTR and Frisch were getting great scoring opportunities throughout the whole period. The first period ended in 0-0 headlined by two strong performances in goal by both HAFTR goalie Ben Horowitz and Frisch goalie Isaac Markovitz. Starting from the drop of the ball in the second period, HAFTR put on the pressure, getting chances from all corners of the court but they couldn’t seem to put one in. Both teams were able to draw penalties early in the period but neither were able to take advantage of the power play. Frisch finally broke the ice with 1:19 left in the second when Natan Neugrochel put in a rebound from right in front of the net, giving Frisch the late 1-0 lead. The third period started with a lot of intensity with both teams knowing what is at stake and with 6:45 left in the period, HAFTR drew a huge penalty to put them on a much needed power play. Frisch’s penalty kill did a fantastic job to kill of the penalty, and with just over 30 seconds left, Jason Alter sealed the game by scoring a goal to give Frisch the win 2-0. Frisch moves on the championship on Sunday in Lawrence Middle School to take on the winner of the DRS vs. TABC game on Tuesday night.
