The JEC Junior Varsity Hockey Team began their season last night the same way that the Varsity Thunder began their season 3 nights earlier, with a game ( and a victory) against the Magen David Warriors.

The JV Thunder shot out of the gate right from the start and moved quickly toward establishing a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish all night, as rookie Sophomore forward Shea Cornick began the scoring with his first MYHSAL league goal, a wrist shot from the high slot to stake the Thunder to a quick 1-0 lead which was quickly added to by returning Sophomore sensation Sammy Simcha who jammed home a loose puck from the side of the net for the first power play goal of the JV Thunders year.

As the period continued the JV Thunder found themselves shorthanded 5 times but it did little to slow down the Thunders momentum as they added two Short Handed goals, one by upcoming freshman defenseman  Aaron Silver on a solid wrist shot from the point, and the other by Sammy Simcha who put his superb stick handling skills on display by intercepting errant Magen David centering pass and then deftly stick handling around a defensive player before backhanding it by the Magen David Goaltender, giving the JV thunder a controlling 4-0 lead which they would take into the first intermission.

The second period saw Magen David score on a one timer from in front that eluded freshman goaltender Dov Weitz who had a very solid debut in net for the JV Thunder. The Thunder was unable to add to their lead in the second which saw every JEC player receiving at least 1 minute of court time. As the third period began however the offense returned, as Sammy Simcha sprung Shea Cornick on a breakaway which he managed to finish on a nifty forehand / backhand move. The scoring was closed out by Freshman All-star Ben-Zion Kapustin, who scored on a shot from the top of the left wing point that beat the Magen David Goalie between his legs to seal the JV Thunders first win of the season 6-1.

The JV Thunder will move on to face the SAR Sting on Monday November 7th at 7:15 pm, in the JEC thunder dome.
